Invictus Response
Poetry is a source of relief, inspiration, and strength. The poem, “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, was a great source of strength for Nelson Mandala. The poem reminds you that only you can change your attitude on life. There are many things in life that you cannot control, but your attitude in life and the way that you react to certain events is entirely under your control. The poem that has provided me with inspiration is “The Invitation” by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. This poem reminds me about the important things in life, such as love, family and adventure. The poem tests your personality and your views on life. It questions what “you dare to dream… [,][whether] you will risk looking like a fool for love [,] for your dream [and] for the adventure of being alive” (5, 10-14). The poem is empowering, it forces you to truly question your way of life; whether or not you are living to your full potential, whether or not you are making the most out of your experiences, or out of your time. I like this poem because it makes me wonder what kind of person I am and what kind of person I would like to be around.
