Getting to Know You

I believe that my persona has changed considerably throughout my life. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become smarter, and more independent. From elementary school to high school, life experiences have allowed me to grow as a person and create an identity for myself.

In elementary school and part of high school, I was different than who I am now. Fundamentally, I was an honest, kind, happy, helpful, caring, and humble person. I did however have my flaws, as any regular child does whilst figuring out whom they want to be. I was easily influenced by my surroundings & I wanted to fit in. I remember in elementary school, TNA sweaters were the most popular sweaters around. I had to get my hands on one! I constantly begged my parents to get me the sweater. They finally caved in after my non-stop pleading; however getting what I wanted came with a price. Naturally, I had to earn it; getting my hands on that sweater was the ultimate victory and what I had done to earn it was forgotten as I held that sweater in my grasp. I was ecstatic because I knew that I had what everyone else had. On the other hand, the values that my parents ingrained in me were extremely important and I did not take them lightly – when it came down to it, I always differentiated between what was right and wrong. One memory that I vividly remember from grade 7 is when I was pressured to drink alcohol. My friend had snuck a bottle out of her mother’s collection and told me to have a few glasses with her. I firmly said no because I knew that doing so would go against my morals. Here’s the catch – I went to great lengths to obtain the sweater however when my morals were challenged I did not give in to temptation. I didn’t care what she thought of me after I’d said no; which looking back makes me feel great about myself because I feel reassured that I was not one to compromise my beliefs in order to fit in.

Today, I still have all the same qualities and morals that I had before. Though, now I am more confident and independent. When it comes to my morals, I take into account what other people believe in and interpret whether or not that’s something I would like to believe in. Therefore, I feel like I am more open-minded than I was before.  I’m still interested in fashion, although I buy what reflects my style and I’m not affected by the latest trends. I also have a lot more life experience and not many people my age do. Additionally, compared to before, my priorities have definitely been sorted out and reevaluated. I value the opinion of those whom I love tremendously over those who I am surrounded by on a day-to-day basis. My family is the most important part of my life. When I was in grade 10, my dad had a severe heart attack. Not a thing mattered during this time other than my dad getting better – grades, expectations, obligations and responsibilities no longer meant anything in comparison. After this experience, I can never forget all the lessons that I’ve learned: the most important one being to cherish the time you have been blessed with, with the people that you live for.

In the future, I hope to have accomplished two things - to have picked a career that accommodates the things that I am passionate about & to obtain an education that will allow me to pursue my passion.  The other one being that I want to build a life in which those whom I love surround me. One of my dreams is to explore the world and experience new cultures! I can to do this by working hard without losing focus on the important things in life.  I hope to continue growing as a person and allowing constant change into my life so that I am able to adapt to new ideas, perspectives and people.
